Tips for using the search tool on this website

Planning applications and licensing

The search box at the top right of all the web pages does not search planning applications or the licensing database. If you would like to search those sections of our website please use the relevant link below;

How the search works (box at the top right of all web pages)

If more than one word is entered into the search box, you will find all pages that contain at least one of the words you have entered. This is similar to conducting an OR search with other search engines, except the results are ranked more intelligently.

It is not necessary to formulate a Boolean expression using “and” “not” and/or “or” operators.

Search for a phrase of sentence

If you put the words in double quotes, you will search for that exact phrase. For example, by enclosing “Council Tax Benefit” in double-quotes, you will only find pages that include this precise phrase, not those that happen to have one or more of these words somewhere on the page.

Using wildcards

The asterisk (*) key can be used instead of any number or letters where ever it is placed in a search for example if you were searching for information about ‘Insulation Grants’ but couldn’t remember what they were called you could search for ‘*Grants’ – which would bring back all the different types of grant including insulation grants.

Using parts of words (stemming)

The search tool will find all words that are grammatically related to a search word. For example, a search for ‘link’ will also find ‘linked’ and ‘linking’.

Search Results

The search results are grouped by categories. Only the first 5 results for each category are shown on the page. To view more results in a particular category, click the ‘All XX pages’ link at the bottom of the category results you are interested in (XX is the number of results).

Search a category

The advance search allows you to search sections of this website. For example you could limit a search for ‘Insulation grants’ to just the Environment pages, so you can ignore any committee papers (Council category). To select a category click in (and therefore ‘tick’) the box next to the category name.

If you are unsure which category the page might be in, make sure the ‘all categories’ box is ticked.
