Working with Others

Summary

We work in partnership with the Police, other councils and organisations to deliver some services. Significant partnerships are detailed on this page.

Strategic Partnerships

Suffolk Strategic Partnership (SSP)

The SSP brings together key stakeholders and agencies in the county to co-ordinate their work on behalf of the people of Suffolk more effectively. All partners play an active part in developing working relationships for the benefit of the community and ensuring a focus on improving the quality of life and governance in a particular locality. Put simply, the SSP seeks to bring together everyone with an interest in the well being of Suffolk and its communities.

Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs)

Through the West Suffolk LSP and the Babergh East LSP we work with other public services in the area and representatives of the business, voluntary and community sectors to contribute to community planning by leading the development of a long-term vision and strategy for the Babergh area.

Haven Gateway Partnership

The Haven Gateway Partnership is also a sub-regional economic partnership part funded by EEDA that covers the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich, Ipswich and Mistley and the surrounding area (including Eastern Babergh) – one of the UK’s largest and most important gateways. HGP provides a framework within which its partner organisations, from the private and public sectors, can work together to promote economic opportunities and secure the future prosperity of the region. The HGP specifically delivers maritime and logistics skills support and works with Cruise businesses at Harwich.

Other Significant Partnerships

Building Control Partnership

Through the Building Control Partnership the management cost of the Building Control services in Babergh District Council, Ipswich Borough Council and Suffolk Coastal District Council is shared. The partnership is investigating joining the three teams into a single unit. The Business case for this proposal is likely to be ready by April 2009.

Emergency Planning and Business Continuity - Joint Emergency Planning Unit (JEPU)

The aim of the JEPU is to facilitate the development, management, support and validation of integrated civil preparedness and business continuity management within Suffolk Local Authorities to enhance the resilience of communities in emergency situations.
More information about the JEPU is on their website http://www.suffolkresilience.com/

Community Safety Partnership

We work with Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Constabulary, The Primary Care Trusts, Suffolk Police Authority, and Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service to work with other organisations to tackle crime and disorder. We all work together to create a "Safer and Stronger Suffolk".

Greater Haven Gateway (GHG)

The Greater Haven Gateway (GHG) sub region was set up in 2004 and is one of nine housing sub regions in the East of England.  It draws together the work of housing organisations in East Essex and East Suffolk. The GHG is led by the 8 councils involved (Babergh, Braintree, Colchester, Ipswich, Maldon, Mid Suffolk, Suffolk Coastal and Tendring Borough and District Councils).  Its members also include housing associations, the Housing Corporation, Supporting People teams, EERA, The Rural Community Council, and Government Office East of England.

Joint Waste Collection Partnership

A new kerbside refuse collection contract, awarded to Serco, commenced operation in April 2007. This is a shared contract with Mid Suffolk District Council and was the result of an award winning procurement process. A Joint Client Team, formed by the integration of the two existing waste management teams, is responsible for the supervision of the contract. Continuing with existing collection round structures, implementation of the contract was seamless. Work continued throughout the year to identify and procure a suitable shared depot site. Such a shared facility will allow the combination of the two separate workforces into a more cohesive, cost efficient unit and allow more effective collection round planning, particularly at the boundaries of the two Council areas. The contractors have commenced a collection round re-modelling project, using Ordnance Survey GIS based software, with a view to achieving these efficiency savings. It is envisaged that new rounds will be introduced in 2008/09,

Leisure Trust

Suffolk Recycling Consortium

The Suffolk Recycling Consortium is a partnership of six Suffolk district and borough councils and Viridor Waste Management. By working together, the Consortium has enabled a major investment to be made at the Great Blakenham recycling plant (MRF). This improved technology has ensured a significant increase in the total amount of recycled material. By working together Suffolk councils have achieved significant improvements in the recycling rates across the county.
