Since spring 2007, we have been using texting to provide residents and staff with useful information through their phones - at a fraction of the cost of using a second class stamp.
It all started in May 2007 when information on Babergh's newly elected councillors was sent via text messages to journalists and broadcasters as a way of saving time and money. This proved to be a great success and since then, the system has been extended and now includes:

Council Tax reminder text
To sign up for Council Tax reminder text 'REMIND', your name, and Council Tax reference' to 07797 870220.
You will receive one text each month reminding you to pay your Council Tax bill.
Ways of paying your bill (direct debit, online, telephone, etc).

To register for Open Access, the system for checking your account online, text 'OpenAccess', and the account numbers you wish to register (view online) to 07797 870220.
The accounts that you can register to view online include:
- Council tax,
- Business rates,
- Rents,
- Invoices issued by Babergh,
- Car park excess charges.
Once we have authenticated your request, we will send you your personal reference and password.
Book a Building Control Inspection
To book a BC inspection text 'INSPECT', date the inspection is required, location, and visit type (eg. foundations, damp proof course, drains, roof, etc) to 07797 870220.
Requests received before 10am can usually be carried out on the same day.
You will receive a text from us confirming that the visit has been booked. In any instance where you do not receive a confirmation text by 10:30 on the day the inspection is required, please phone the Building Control office on 01473 825853.
Future text services
Plans include using the text system to report fly-tipping and abandoned vehicles to the Babergh offices. More information will be available about these systems when they are up and running.
