Babergh Youth Conference 2007

Summary

Babergh Youth Conference 2007 held at the Stoke-by-Nayland club.

TIME 2 MAKE A CHANGE - a Youth Conference with a difference
8th October 2007 Stoke by Nayland Club

Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio made an impassioned plea to Babergh’s teens to consider the dangers of global warming and just what they can to do to make a difference.

The teen heartthrob took the starring role in a DVD message  used by Babergh District Council to open its 2007 Youth Conference - Time 2 Make a Change on 8th October.

Representatives, aged between 12 and 16 years old, from schools and youth organisations across the district took part in the event which looked at the issue of global warming, and in particular at carbon footprints and food miles.

Workshops throughout the day saw staff from Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer and Waitrose, Sudbury, working together with students to design and market their own breakfast cereal.  A consumer panel, made up of Babergh councillors and schoolteachers, then taste-tested  the cereal.

Delegates had to consider how far the ingredients had travelled, whether  locally-produced ingredients should be used and how the cereal should be packaged in order to design a product which would be as carbon neutral as possible.

Students were also given presentations on how they could reduce their individual carbon footprints and how the effects of global warming could change our landscapes in the future.

A short DVD of the conference was filmed by CSV Media Film Production and showcased at Suffolk County Council’s Conference on 16th October where a campaign to create Suffolk as the greenest county in the UK was launched.

Jill Barton, Babergh’s Corporate Support Officer, said: “We are really excited about this year’s conference which was co-ordinated to promote and raise awareness of environmental issues both locally and globally.

“All delegates were encouraged to make lifestyle changes and the resulting DVD will further promote this important environmental message within schools and the wider community. Special thanks are due to Waitrose who once again sponsored our Conference."
