Up on The Roof

Summary

For anyone who has ever dreamed... Upon the Roof is a poignant and affectionate musical comedy which celebrates the enduring power of friendship. Five students at Hull University are up on the roof of their student digs for the last meeting of "The Roof Club" - they are an a capella singing group who perform doo-wop covers.

‘Up on the Roof’ starts with five graduates of Hull University in 1975, sitting in the roof of their student accommodation, for the last meet of the all singing and some dancing ‘Roof Club’. As we hear of their individual hopes and aspirations we are treated with some classic cover songs of their own arrangement. We watch as relationships, careers, failures and successes develop and change over ten years within this group of close friends.

Each performer astounded the audience with their ability to remember all of the different ‘Do-wahs’ and then each have their own moment in the spotlight with the melody. I was particularly impressed with Gemma Wardle’s (Angela) performance of ‘Band of Gold’ as she provided entertainment alongside some great vocals. Although I think the biggest surprise came from Gavin Spokes (Kevin) right near the end of Act 3, as he broke out from the deep bass line accompaniment that he had provided for most of the show.

Some remarkable set changes were brought about in the 15 minute intervals between acts, it was fascinating to watch as a shabby roof transformed into a church hall wedding reception and then into a French villa, each completely different but equally convincing. The lighting was well fitting with the additions of atmospheric twinkling stars and lanterns.

This performance is not suited to a younger audience, due to the use of songs that they may not recognise and some explicit language. The play is both funny and serious, with the added bonus of being extremely entertaining. I would recommend a viewing of ‘Up on the Roof’, it has so much talent to be appreciated and will have you smiling and singing in no time at all.
