Dick Whittington - The Rock and Roll Pantomime
30th November-27th January
Before we even took our seats we were met by a magical atmosphere that was certainly enhanced by the imaginative set design and creative lighting. However it was more fuelled by the warmth and enthusiasm of the cast of Dick Whittington who greeted everyone in the auditorium upon entry, which it has to be said generated abundant excitement in the audience, and not just with the children either.
The production fused traditional elements of pantomime with a modern musical twist of a live band and songs the whole family can sing along to, which included most memorably Uptown Girl and Walking on Sunshine. The sheer talent demonstrated by this cast of ten was extraordinary. The whole cast were constantly performing, either playing a musical instrument, singing, acting, or executing fantastic dance sequences, often doing all of these simultaneously.
The connection between the audience and the actors was exceptionally strong and everyone was drawn in by the sheer hilarity of the cleverly crafted script which included jokes that appealed to all ages. An exceptional comic performance it must be said was given by Garry Lake, as Sarah the Cook who literally had us in tears. There were strong vocals from Emily Grace who played Dick’s love interest Alice and also an encore given by Shirley Darroch that had the entire audience dancing in the stalls during their standing ovation.
A truly fantastic show from an exceptionally talented cast that is not to be missed.
An incredible start to the Christmas season.
