Council Tax Introduction

Summary

Welcome to the Council tax pages of this website

We are upgrading the IT Systems for Mid Suffolk District Council and Babergh District Council Council Tax, Business Rates, Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit as part of an ongoing partnership to improve services.  As a result these IT Systems will not be accessible from 22nd November 2011 until 15th December 2011.

During this period we wil lnot be able to process moves, New Claims or changes.  You should still report moves and changes and submit new claims during this period, do not delay contacting us.  However:-

  • Direct Debits for Council Tax and Business Rates will continue to be collected on the due dates.
  • Payment of Housing Benefit will continue on the due dates.

There will, unfortunately, be delays in processing moves, claims and changes that arise during this period.

Where your Housing Benefit should cease, or substantially reduce during this period (e.g. you gain employment or move out of a property) the Housing Benefit will continue to be paid, leading to an overpayment.  We will warn you if you are likely to be overpaid as such overpayments will be recovered.  We will be suggesting that any overpaid amount is set aside so that you are in a position to repay this when requested, once we resume normal service.

Where your Council Tax or Business Rate liability should cease during this period (e.g. you move out of the Council's area) we recommend that you cancel your Direct Debit Mandate with your Bank as we will be unable to stop Direct Debits until after 15th December.  If you move within the Council's area we would suggest that you keep the Direct Debit running as the details, and any credit, will be transferred.

If you require assistance or have any concerns please contact Customer Services either via email customer.services@babergh.gov.uk or telephone 01473 825798 between 9am to 5pm each week day.  We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.
