Introduction
The aim of the Conservation Team is to conserve and enhance Babergh District's built heritage and to increase public awareness, appreciation and understanding of the historic environment.
The Team provides professional guidance to councillors, the public, agents, builders and anyone else involved in the development or care and repair of heritage assets. This may involve preliminary negotiations, commenting on applications and agreeing details on schemes that have been approved, in addition to providing advice on the care and repair of historic buildings.
Background
The historic environment is a precious and finite resource and it is a powerful reminder of the work and way of life of earlier generations. Buildings which are of national importance for their ‘special architectural or historic interest’ are known as 'listed buildings'. There are about 4000 listed buildings in Babergh, which form part of the District’s unique character.
English Heritage also produce a Schedule of Ancient Monuments of which there are 26 in the District. These are usually very old structures or ruins, which generally cannot be lived in. These are also nationally important and strict regulations apply to their protection. Suffolk County Council is the first point of contact for all such archaeological matters within the county.
Babergh has around 4000 listed buildings, 28 conservation areas, 26 scheduled ancient monuments and 4 registered historic parks and gardens. This is a significant number of protected buildings, structures and areas, forming an important part of Babergh’s physical environment.
