Broom Hill is a Local Nature Reserve owned and managed by Babergh District Council, situated west of the river Brett and the town of Hadleigh. Hadleigh lies in a shallow valley and Broom Hill, together with Constitutional Hill and Friars Hill form part of the valley side from Kersey Vale in the north to Layham in the south.

Broom Hill is connected to Hadleigh Riverside Walk by a public footpath that can be accessed from either Toppesfield Bridge or the Babergh District Council offices. It is also connected to the wider countryside by other public footpaths.

From the top of the site there is a panoramic view over Hadleigh and the surrounding landscape.

Broom Hill is largely formed from glacial sand and gravel. Material was quarried from a small area for the local brickworks, situated where Brick Kiln bungalow is now. The brickworks closed in 1928 but little else is known of its history and where the bricks were used. It is rumoured that they were of a soft crumbly texture, so perhaps none survive! If you have any information about the brickworks, please let us know. |
