Location Plan

The two and a half mile (3½ km) Hadleigh Railway Walk follows the disused railway line that linked Hadleigh to Ipswich and London via Bentley junction.  It is now a Local Nature Reserve and owned and managed by Babergh District Council.

Hunters Bridge

There are small car parks at both ends of the Railway Walk. It is open to horse riders and cyclists as well as pedestrians.  A public footpath crosses the track and connects the Railway Walk to the wider countryside.

An Information Leaflet on the Hadleigh Railway Walk is available from local Tourist Information Centres, local libraries and the Council Offices in Hadleigh.

Seven and a half miles of railway line was built between Hadleigh and Bentley Junction and opened for trains in 1847.  The passenger service was discontinued in the1930’s when a regular bus service was introduced.  The goods trains continued until the 1960’s.

Thousands of miles of track throughout the United Kingdom have been taken out of service since the 1960’s.  Some of these have been taken back into agriculture, but many (like Hadleigh Railway Walk) have created a network of good recreational track while remaining an important wildlife sanctuary.

The Waypost

The Hadleigh Railway Walk is also part of the National Cycle Network, supported by Sustrans, a charity that works to encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport in order to reduce motor traffic.  The Waypost Sculpture is one of a thousand mileposts of various designs, funded by the Royal Bank of Scotland, to mark the creation of the National Cycle Network.
