Construction activities

Summary

Information on complaints of nuisance from construction activities - including excessive noise, smoke from bonfires, or dust.

The Environmental Services Division may receive complaints of nuisance from construction activities. Nuisance may be due to excessive noise, smoke from bonfires, or dust.

A certain amount of noise is an inevitable consequence of work on building sites. If operating in a sensitive neighbourhood, work should not start before 7.30a.m. with noisy activity delayed until 8.00a.m.  Sunday working should be avoided where possible. Machinery should be well maintained and properly silenced.

As a general principle, bonfires should not be be used to dispose of waste from building sites. These inevitably give rise to complaints.

Special measures may be necessary to prevent nuisance from dust, including the use of water sprinklers.

Noise from DIY activities creates special problems, as householders may not be able to carry out work during the normal working day. In this situation neighbours must be carefully considered to avoid complaints.
