Food sampling

Summary

Information about how and why we test food from businesses within the Babergh area.

Officers from the Food and Safety Regulation Team regularly check on the quality of food sold by businesses within the district. This usually involves having officers purchase food as customers and then transport the food under controlled conditions to a laboratory for testing. The food is analysed to check for the presence of harmful or high numbers of bacteria that may arise through poor storage, handling or preparation of the food or its ingredients.

If problems are found, this is not always the fault of the business selling the food - they can arise in some cases from suppliers of ingredients that are not under the business's direct control. In such cases, we may carry out an investigation to try where the problem has occurred. If a sample of food is taken from your premises, you will receive a letter and a copy of the laboratory report within around 2 weeks of the sample being taken.
