Summary
|
All life on earth depends on environmental conditions. Human activity has altered these conditions in ways that are harmful to life, resulting in global warming, ozone depletion, the creation of deserts and by causing acid rain.

Why Does the Environment Matter?Technology developed in recent years has enhanced our power to change the environment more rapidly and, although we benefit greatly with better health and ease of travel, this has led to major environmental problems, such as pollution of air, water and land and the rapid consumption of irreplaceable resources such as fossil fuels, hardwoods and scarce minerals.
It is essential that the environment is not damaged to the further detriment of future generations and we can continue to enjoy a good quality of life simply by making small changes in our lifestyles.
Local Agenda 21
At the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the "Earth Summit") in Rio de Janeiro over 170 nations including the U.K. signed "The Rio Declaration". Described as "an Agenda for the 21st Century”, the declaration constitutes the most comprehensive and far-reaching programme of action ever approved by the world community.
The major emphasis of Agenda 21 is to maintain and preserve a healthy environment for future generations.
