Hazardous Waste

Summary

Avoid wastage by only buying as much paint, cleaning agents and other chemicals, as you need.

Paint

If the paint is of a good quality and re-usable it can be taken to the Colchester Re-Paint scheme who distribute it to community groups and individuals on low incomes. A collection point is located at the Colchester HWRC (Maldon Road, Shrub End).

More details of the Colchester Re>Paint scheme can be found at: www.repaintessex.org.uk or call 01206 367776

Disposal of Paint:

  • Empty containers of paint (regardless of type) and chemicals can be disposed of in the black (residual) bin.
  • Partly used tins of emulsion paint should be stored with the lids off and with some sand added to it until it solidifies when it can be disposed of in the black residual bin.
  • Any containers of paint or chemicals that still contain the substance in a liquid form will not be collected if they are put in the black bin.
  • For information : none of Suffolk County Council's Household Waste & Recycling Centre accept containers with paint still in them.

Hazardous waste collection service

Household Waste and Recycling Centres will refuse to take these substances. However, a special ‘Hazardous waste collection’ can be arranged for;

  • Part or full containers of solvent based paint
  • Other hazardous household waste
  • Bonded sheets of asbestos (please see our asbestos page).

This service may take approximately 3 to 4 weeks from when you arrange it.

The Hazardous waste collection service is 'free' for Babergh residents. Collection, treatment and disposal costs of hazardous waste are expensive for the Council (approx. £50 per collection). For this reason, residents are urged to follow the advice as set out above and to use this service only when absolutely necessary.

To arrange a collection, call the Refuse Hotline on 0845 6066045 (Local Rate Call)
