Aerosols can not be recycled in your blue bin however they can be recycled in a can bank.
Aluminium
Aluminium food and drinks cans should be placed in your blue bin for recycling. Alternatively, they can be recycled in a can bank.
Asbestos
Services for asbestos removal are dependent on the amount to be removed and whether the asbestos is a home or workplace. Please see the Asbestos web page for full details.
Ash
Wood Ash can be composted or put in your brown bin. Coal ash goes in your black bin only when completely cool.
Batteries (Car)
Car batteries can be taken to one of the household waste and recycling centres in Babergh, where they are collected separately in containers.
Batteries (household)
All household waste and recycling centres in Babergh have a special receptacle for household batteries. Alternatively, try to use rechargeable batteries where possible. More information on recycling batteries can be found at the Recycle Now website or the Directgov website
Bicycles
Some Household Waste & Recycling Centres will recycle bicycles. To find out which sites do telephone the Household Waste and Recycling Hotline on: 0845 6066067. Alternatively, Re-Cycle collect bicycles in Colchester. Telephone 01206 863111 or visit the Re-cycle website for more information.
Books
Good quality books can be taken to charity shops. Damaged books can be recycled in your blue bin - but please separate hard covers first. Also there are a number of book banks in Suffolk.
BRITA Filters
BRITA (who produce water filters) has launched a new in-store recycling scheme. Recycling bins are now situated in a range of high street stores such as Robert Dyas, Argos, Cargo, Comet, Sainsbury's, Homebase, Asda, and Makro. Other major retailer collection points will be following soon. The BRITA branded bins will be located next to the existing water filter category in store. Customers can recycle any BRITA consumer product filter cartridge, including those for the new BRITA water filter taps.
Bulky Refuse
Large unwanted items (bulky refuse) can be donated to charity, offered to others free, or taken to the Household Waste and Recycling Centre. Car Parts
Car parts need to be disposed of at a breakers yard or scrap metal merchants. Try Sackers Ltd on 01473 830373. Car parts are not accepted at Household Waste & Recycling Centres.
Cardboard
Cardboard can be recycled in your blue bin, see what can I recycle in my blue bin? Large boxes should be flattened and left at the side of your blue bin. Please ensure that there is no polystyrene packaging with the cardboard boxes. Alternatively, cardboard can be put into your compost bin. Cardboard is a good way of reducing smells and increasing the effectiveness of your compost bin, it does this by providing air pockets.
Carrier Bags
Many supermarkets have a carrier bag recycling centre in store as well as 'bag for life' schemes where they will replace high quality plastic bags once you have worn them out. Wherever possible reuse your plastic bags for your shopping or as bin liners. However, plastic bags and plastic film can now be taken to the following Household Waste & Recycling Centres: Hadleigh, Ipswich and Sudbury. CDs
Good quality unwanted CDs can be donated to charity shops or sold at jumble sales.
Chemicals
Unwanted chemicals should be disposed of carefully (see hazardous waste), with lids firmly closed and in their original containers. Contact the Refuse Hotline on 0845 6066045 (Local Rate Call) to arrange a collection.
Christmas Cards
WH Smiths collect Christmas Cards in aid of the Woodland Trust. Alternatively, they can be recycled by putting them in your blue bin, see what can I recycle in my blue bin?.
Christmas Trees
Real Christmas Trees can be taken to one of the household waste and recycling centres in Babergh for composting or disposed of in your brown bin, see garden waste collection.

Clothes
Donate unwanted clothes to charity shops or take to your nearest textile bank.
Coins
Look out for appeals by charities for foreign currency. Also banks sometimes collect foreign coins.

Computers (and parts)
Old computers can be disposed at one of the household waste and recycling centres in Babergh. There is a special container for electrical items. We would advise that you ensure your hard drive is wiped of all personal data before bringing it to a waste and recycling centre.

Cooking Oil
Please do not pour waste oil down the drain; even with washing up liquid. The oil will cause problems in the sewers with rats and blockages. Even liquid oils such as vegetable oil will emulsify in the sewer environment.
- Try to use the correct amount you need
- Mop up excess fat with a piece of bread and put out for the birds
- Excess cooking oil from householders can be deposited in collection banks located at the household waste and recycling centres in Babergh. The oil will then be purified and used for the generation of green electricity
