Nappies
Where possible use reusable cotton nappies. There are also economical disposable nappies that break down faster than other disposable nappies. For more information contact the Suffolk Real Nappy Network on 01473 253809
Newspapers
Recycle your old newspaper in your blue bin, see what can I recycle in my blue bin?. Scrunched up newspaper can also be recycled by home composting.
Oil (cooking)
Please do not pour waste oil down the drain; even with washing up liquid. The oil will cause problems in the sewers with rats and blockages. Even liquid oils such as vegetable oil will emulsify in the sewer environment.
- Try to use the correct amount you need
- Mop up excess fat with a piece of bread and put out for the birds
-
Large amounts of oil can be collected from caterers and restaurants:
- Anglian Oils: 01366 381870
- Fish Trade Supplies: 01473 601680
Oil (engine)
Engine Oil can be taken to one of the household waste and recycling centres in Babergh.
Oil Tanks
Old oil tanks need to be disposed of at a scrap metal merchant. Try Sackers Ltd on 01473 830373.
Packaging
Try to buy products with minimal packaging to avoid excess waste.
Paint
Try to avoid wastage by only buying as much paint as you need or donating unused paint to family or friends. Empty paint tins (regardless of type) can be disposed of in the black bin. Part full tins of emulsion paint should be stored with the lid off and with sand, soil or sawdust added to it until it solidifies and can be disposed of in the black residual bin. Part or full tins of solvent based paint can be collected by the council by contacting the Refuse Hotline on 0845 6066045 (Local Rate Call). Please note that none of the household waste and recycling centres in Babergh (including Foxhall) will accept paint (including empty tins).
Pallets & crates
Call the National Pallet Services on 01485 529030 for information on local companies that collect pallets and crates from trade premises.
Paper
Paper and cardboard can be recycled in your blue bin, see what can I recycle in my blue bin?. Large cardboard boxes should be flattened and left at the side of your bin.
Pet Waste
You are allowed to deposit 1 bag (of normal black bin liner size) of pet waste (e.g. rabbit hutch material) per week at a household waste and recycling centre in Babergh (this does not apply to businesses such as kennels or catteries etc as this will require a trade collection). Alternatively, the contents of the average rabbit or guinea-pig hutch (e.g. straw, wood shavings, vegetable trimmings) could be home composted in small amounts, providing your pet has a vegetarian diet.
Plastic Bags
Many supermarkets have a carrier bag recycling centre in store as well as 'bag for life' schemes where they will replace high quality plastic bags once you have worn them out. Wherever possible reuse your plastic bags for your shopping or as bin liners. However, plastic bags and plastic film can now be taken to the following Household Waste & Recycling Centres: Hadleigh, Ipswich and Sudbury. As a last resort, carrier bags can be placed in your black bin but must not go in the blue bin, see what can I recycle in my blue bin?.
Plastic Bottles
Plastic bottles (look out for the labelling PET '1' or '2' inside the triangular symbol on the bottle), margarine containers and clean plastic containers can be recycled in your blue bin, see what can I recycle in my blue bin? Remember to remove the lids from plastic bottles but still put them in the blue bin.
Plastic plant pots
Plastic plant pots, along with most hard/rigid plastics, can currently be recycled at Hadleigh, Mildenhall, Felixstowe, Bury St Edmunds and Foxhall Household Waste Recycling Centres(HWRCs). The remaining Household Waste Recycling Centres will accept them for disposal only. Other sites will be introducing hard/rigid plastics collection bins in the future as part of a rolling programme of site improvements. If the pots are still useable you may like to call your local garden centre/nursery to see if they can re-use them or offer them to friends/neighbours.
Polystyrene
Unfortunately polystyrene (including polystyrene food trays)is one of those materials that cannot be recycled anywhere in Suffolk so will have to be disposed of in your waste to landfill black bin.
Postage stamps
Many charities (e.g. Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, Oxfam, RNLI) collect old postage stamps. Cut around postage stamps, leave a good margin and do not steam off.
Records, cassettes and video tapes
Charity shops will accept old records, cassettes and videos. They cannot be recycled in your blue bin.
