Housing Strategy

Summary

This document details the plans on how the housing issues of the district will be tackled over a five year period.

Babergh District Council's Housing Strategy 2004-09 (PDF, 375kb) details Babergh's plans to tackle the housing issues of the District over a five year period. It provides a summary of the main objectives, policies and programmes for Babergh’s housing service.

The Council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee considers an annual update of the Housing Strategy undertaken by the council’s Housing Panel.  An annual Consultation Day ensures that the Strategy continues to be an effective and meaningful document for all our stakeholders. The Council’s performance review and audit processes also plays a key role in monitoring and reporting the progress the Housing Panel makes in delivering the Strategy’s Action Plan.  The monitoring process is designed to be as transparent and effective as possible.

Greater Haven Gateway Housing Sub-Region

Housing Sub regions have been established in response to the Government’s Sustainable Communities Plan 2003, and should reflect local housing markets. The Greater Haven Gateway (GHG) sub region was set up in 2004 and is one of nine housing sub regions in the East of England.  It draws together the work of housing organisations in East Essex and East Suffolk. The GHG is led by the 8 councils involved (Babergh, Braintree, Colchester, Ipswich, Maldon, Mid Suffolk, Suffolk Coastal and Tendring Borough and District Councils).  Its members also include housing associations, the Housing Corporation, Supporting People teams, EERA, The Rural Community Council, and Government Office East of England.

See the latest Newsletter(PDF 69kb) for information on the current work of the Greater Haven Gateway.

The GHG also produces a Housing Strategy (PDF796kb) to reflect the issues of the authorities that make up the sub-region.  It establishes priorities for action and for funding.  This sub-regional strategy in turn feeds into the work of East of England Regional Assembly and the Regional Housing Strategy that they produce.
