Why a 'Beacon' Award?
Babergh District Council has recently achieved ‘Beacon Authority’ status in recognition of the Be Active Leisure Inclusion Project’s groundbreaking work with ‘hard to reach’ groups through culture and sport. Government assessors were fulsome in their praise, saying that they were “greatly impressed by the clarity of the council’s vision, the enthusiasm and ability of its staff and the first hand evidence of the council’s programmes making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people”.
As part of the Beacon process, Babergh will play a full role in the Government's improve ment and development dissemination programme – along with seven other round 7 ‘Culture and Sport’ Beacon Authorities – to help share good practice and encourage local government to develop similar schemes across the country.
Beacon Open Day
As part of the good practice dissemination programme, Babergh hosted a ‘Learning Open Day’ at Great Cornard Upper School Sports Centre on February 1, 2007. Culture and sport representatives from across the country attended the event – which aimed to show how Babergh has made sport accessible to everyone, regardless of age and ability.
