SUFFOLK YOUTH GAMES

Member of Baberghs Suffolk Youth Games 07 team in the high jump

Babergh’s budding athletes took centre stage at last year’s Suffolk Youth Games - and the hunt is now on for the stars of this year's event.

The team were among the 1,000 competitors who battled it out in a variety of sports including athletics, basketball, cricket and badminton to try and take home the winning trophy.

Babergh’s team came seventh overall at the games, held in Bury St Edmunds in July 2007, but the girls’ hockey team remained victorius and took first prize.

The date for the Suffolk Youth Games 2008 has been set for July 6 at Northgate Sports Centre in Ipswich. Events already confirmed are Table Tennis, Hockey, Tag Rugby, Athletics, Basketball, Tennis, Badminton, Girls Football and Girls Cricket.

Sue Longhurst, Babergh’s Community Development Officer (sport), said: “This type of event is important as it places such a great emphasis on exercise and being healthy.

"It also illustrates how you can achieve sporting success regardless as to whether you have a disability or are able-bodied.

"This year’s Babergh team worked fantastically hard and we are already looking forward to next year’s event.”
