BABERGH 'PLEASED' WITH GOVERNMENT GRANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Summary

Babergh District Council is pleased with the Government’s provisional announcement that grant to the Council next year (2005/06) could increase by 6%.

Babergh District Council is pleased with the Government’s provisional announcement that grant to the Council next year (2005/06) could increase by 6%.

Sue Carpendale, Chairman of the Strategy Committee, says that “this is good news, but it is only giving Babergh part of the grant which was withheld from us last year. In 2004/05, the Council was entitled to an additional £347,000, but because of the ceiling put on grant increases by the Government, this was not paid. So I am pleased that this year a significant part of that withheld grant will be received”.

Cllr. Carpendale continued “as regards the level of Council Tax for next year, it is too early to say as there are still a number of unknowns. But our overriding aim is to, once again, achieve a Council Tax increase at the rate of inflation. We are also maintaining our drive for further savings and greater efficiency in order to achieve that objective”.

Last year Babergh increased its part of the Council tax by 2.8% to £115.30 for a Band D property and if it achieves an inflation increase again next year, that will be the fourth time in the last six years.
