Babergh District Council remains on course to set a Council Tax increase of 6 pence a week for a typical household after the 2004/05 budget was discussed further yesterday by the Strategy Committee.
According to Sue Carpendale, Chairman of Babergh’s Strategy Committee, the proposed increase of 2.8% "would see the ‘Babergh bit’ of a Band D property’s Council Tax increase from the current £112.12 per year to £115.30 per year. This amounts to an increase of just 6 pence a week and is a reflection of how hard staff and Councillors have been working to redirect resources and make savings".
"As a result, Babergh is budgeting to put more money into services which we know are important to the public, such as a cleaner environment, affordable housing and facilities for young people, whilst still keeping our Council Tax increase to the rate of inflation".
However, Mrs Carpendale once again repeated the concern of Babergh that this balancing act between improving services, identifying savings and keeping Council Tax increases down to a minimum is likely to be even harder in future years.
The final decision on the budget and the level of Council Tax will be made at the end of February.
