Babergh’s refuse contractors have been pulling out the stops by working 14 hour days and at weekends to make up for the time lost to the bad weather last week.
Because of the difficult conditions on both the roads and pavements caused by the snow showers and ice, Babergh’s refuse contractors were unable to make their normal collections last Wednesday (January 28th) and Thursday (January 29th).
However, since then the binmen employed by Cleanaway have been targetting the backlog of non-residual waste and have made substantial progress in getting the service back up-to-date. On Friday, Babergh’s binmen put in a 14 hour day as they worked on until 8pm, 8 vehicles went out on the following Saturday and worked through until 5pm and yesterday (Monday) collections continued until 7.30pm.
"We appreciate that there may be a minority of households, especially in the more remote parts of the district, that we haven’t yet been able to reach. We apologise for this inconvenience this and are currently redoubling our efforts to ensure that their waste is collected" explained Malcolm Firth, Babergh’s Head of Environmental Services.
Babergh estimates that most of the remaining backlog will be cleared by Thursday February 5th. The trade waste collection service has been largely unaffected, with the few backlogs also due to be cleared by Thursday.
"I would like to thank the refuse collectors for all their efforts in trying to clear the backlog. Their determination to get things sorted out has been very impressive indeed".
