Babergh District Council is “an excellent landlord” – and that’s official! This was the verdict of a survey carried out amongst council tenants during November 2003. At a meeting on 12th July, Babergh’s Overview & Scrutiny (Community Services) Committee heard how 88% of Babergh tenants are ‘satisfied overall’ with their landlord. This showed an increase of 1% on the same survey carried out in 2000/01, which at the time saw Babergh achieve one of the highest overall results in the country, although national comparisons are yet to be obtained for the current round of consultation.
Babergh surveyed a random sample of 55% of council tenants as part of its Best Value Review of Tenant Services. The survey, which must follow a format issued by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), was sent to 2000 council homes in the district seeking tenants views on matters ranging from overall satisfaction to levels of communication from the council and the neighbourhood in general.
Although not all areas came out as ‘excellent’, Babergh are keen to build on those highlighted for improvement as part of its Best Value Improvement Plan for Tenant Services.
Chairman of the Council Sue Wigglesworth commented, “We are delighted with the results of this survey. We take public consultation very seriously and it was reassuring to receive a 71% return for the Tenant Satisfaction Survey as this indicates that our tenants are keen to tell us how they feel, and give us an indication of what services we need to improve in the future”.
