COUNCIL SAYS “WE WILL FIND YOU” TO ILLEGAL FLY-TIPPERS

Summary

“Fly-tippers living in the Ipswich and Babergh areas could be in for a nasty surprise” is the message being sent out today by Babergh District and Ipswich Borough Councils.

“Fly-tippers living in the Ipswich and Babergh areas could be in for a nasty surprise” is the message being sent out today by Babergh District and Ipswich Borough Councils.

Babergh District Council’s Litter Warden, Chris Sandford, visited a location notorious for illegal fly tipping near the entrance of Anglian Water’s Sproughton Sewage Works in Church Lane recently.  Mr Sandford, who earlier this year co-ordinated a massive clear up operation on the site, was horrified to find it once again littered with illegally dumped debris.

Among the items found on this occasion was packaging from a mail-order company, clearly showing the address of the recipient.  Babergh is keen to stamp out illegal dumping and will be paying a doorstep visit to the addressee concerned, who could face a fine of up to £20,000 - or even a custodial prison sentence.

Malcolm Firth, Head of Environmental Services at Babergh District Council said, “The amazing thing about the packaging we found in Church Lane is that it doesn’t even belong to an address in the Babergh district.  It would appear that residents living in the Ipswich Borough Council area are driving into the Babergh district to offload their rubbish, leaving Babergh residents to foot the bill for the clean-up operation”.

Babergh will be working closely with Ipswich Borough Council’s Cleansing Services team and stepping up action to stamp out the fly-tippers, wherever they may be.  Malcolm Firth concluded by saying “No matter what it takes, we will target individuals and businesses alike to rid the area of this unwanted menace”.
