From next Monday (29th November) Babergh District Council and its partners will begin the street enhancement works in Gainsborough Street. The overall scheme is designed to enhance the road and improve pedestrian access and safety.

In the run-up to Christmas only the most minor and non-disruptive parts of the overall scheme will be carried out. These will involve adjustments to the traffic island on the junction on Market Hill close to the Gainsborough Street pelican crossing. This work will be completed by no later than 17th December, and will ensure that businesses in the area will be open as usual between now and Christmas.

The majority of works have scheduled to be carried out in the first three months of 2005, and involve pavement widening, using Yorkstone, down to Gainsborough’s House and improved crossing facilities at the Market Hill end of the street, followed by improvements to the southern side of Gainsborough Street.

The scheme will also provide short term parking with disabled places and a loading area, when it is complete.

Clare Vint, Babergh’s Conservation & Design Officer said “Babergh believes that this programme of investment will enhance the look of Sudbury’s historic town centre, as well as improving the ease with which pedestrians can use the street.” Notes to Editors:

Babergh’s partners on this project include English Heritage, Sudbury Town and Suffolk County Council.

The project is part of the Sudbury Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme which aims to encourage the economy of the town through a programme of building grants and environmental enhancements.  Works to North Street are already complete under this scheme.

The Community Energy Project, in addition to those above, is helping to fund the building repairs and reinstatement grants on the Sudbury HERS.
