DISTRICT DEBATE COULD INFLUENCE FUTURE DIRECTION OF COUNCIL

Summary

Babergh District Council is calling on residents to get involved in having a say on the needs of the district and the Council’s priorities, policies and spending levels at the annual Babergh State of the District debate on 26th November.

Babergh District Council is calling on residents to get involved in having a say on the needs of the district and the Council’s priorities, policies and spending levels at the annual Babergh State of the District debate on 26th November.

This year, the event has been expanded with the aim of more effectively bringing together the views of residents, councillors and representatives of voluntary and other bodies.

Prior to the debate itself, a number of representatives will be invited to give brief presentations on key issues for the district. This will be followed by participants being divided up into workshops to consider a number of key themes, including how Babergh delivers its service priorities, provides its services and Council Tax levels. The recommendations of these workshops will then feed into the debate itself at which residents will be able to participate.

“The timing of the State of the District debate will allow the views of residents and partners to be considered by Babergh’s Strategy Committee in January. This is a crucial meeting because it will consider the policy and budget framework for the future and will have an impact on the 2005/06 budget” explained Geoff Kistner, Babergh’s Corporate Director.

“This provides an opportunity for residents to have a say as to how the council is delivering its services, as well as having a potential influence on the direction of the Council and its priorities”.

The State of the District event will take place at the Stoke by Nayland Golf Club on 26th November. Members of the public are invited to attend for the afternoon session from 1.30pm to 4pm and will have a chance to comment on the issues debated.

Anyone wishing to attend in the afternoon should ‘phone Jill Barton on (01473) 826674 for further information.
