Ipswich Town Football Club last night played host to disabled footballers from South Suffolk in an event organised by Babergh District Council as part of its ‘Be Active’ initiative.
Eight people took advantage of a free tour of the Portman Road stadium, followed by a coaching session provided by Ipswich Town Disability FC.
Babergh District Council’s ‘Be Active’ Officer, Greg Cooper said “We had a really good response to Ipswich Town’s open invitation to take part in this very special tour and coaching session. Everyone who took part enjoyed the experience enormously, and I would like to thank the club for their support of the Be Active Leisure Inclusion Project”.
Neil Catchpole, activities co-ordinator at Barleycombe Residential Home, attended with two young footballers with learning disabilities and thought “It has been a brilliant evenings’ fun and a great opportunity for the lads to make new friends”. Terry Gilbert who is profoundly deaf said “I really enjoyed the tour of the stadium, especially seeing all the trophies and the players kits in the changing room”.
All participants now have the opportunity to play regularly with local club Cornard Dynamos, who are providing Disability Coaching sessions every Saturday from 5th March. ‘Be Active’ Officer, Greg Cooper is keen to hear from anyone interested in attending these sessions on 01473 826656 or by email at leisure@babergh.gov.uk.
