Babergh District Council today publishes the names and details of the 24 winners of its 2005 Community Achievement Awards. The awards scheme, now in its 13th year, attracted entries from a broad cross-section of the community, making tough work for the judges. Included amongst the winners for 2005 are projects serving young people and a Special Award for the creation of a “Village Inn”.
“The judges were amazed, once again, at the diversity of the people living in our district whose unselfish efforts and exceptional community spirit make our many towns and villages a better place to live” explained Jill Barton, organiser of the annual event.
Many of the awards support young people across the Babergh district. Laura Spalding and Jenna Abbott, both 17 from Capel St Mary, are the recipients of a Young Persons Award for their commitment to the building of a teenshelter in their village. Long Melford’s John Phillips is awarded in recognition of the work he has carried out for “Crucial Crew”, an annual project run for approximately 600 youngsters which aims to raise awareness of safety and community responsibility.
A Special Award is given to Geoff Phillips of Brettenham for his novel creation of a “Village Inn”. Brettenham doesn’t have a village pub, but thanks to Geoff’s hard work and initiative, every Friday the village hall is transformed into Brettenham’s very own hostelry!
A celebration evening for all 24 winners will take place on Wednesday 23rd February at the Stoke by Nayland Club. The special Guest of Honour for the evening will be BBC Radio Suffolk’s Breakfast Show host Mark Murphy who will present certificates to the 2005 Community Achievers.
