A
Suffolk
district council with a growing environmental reputation and the
UK
’s leading retailer are working together to blitz a serious litter problem.
In recent weeks, there has been a build up of discarded plastic bags on the trees, grass banks and verges surrounding the retail park at the Copdock Interchange. Now Babergh District Council has teamed up with the retailer to clear the unsightly mess, as well as advising the retail park as to the best ways of sorting out a long-term solution to the problem.
Babergh’s contractors will be joining forces with Tesco staff to remove the thousands of small plastic bags that have accumulated around the area. A number of Babergh Councillors will also be helping out the effort on Wednesday morning.
According to Jonas Grist, Babergh’s Waste Technical Officer “Babergh is proud of its record in clearing fly-tipping and other litter as quickly as possible from our district. The situation at the Copdock Interchange is certainly serious and whilst we are aware that the clear plastic bags are biodegradable, in the weeks it takes for them to degrade, they create an ugly eyesore”.
“This big clean-up will hopefully sort out the present situation, but we hope that by working with Tesco and the retail park to identify longer-term solutions the problem will be reduced in the future”.
Jon Grotier, Tesco Copdock’s Customer Services Manager said “Tesco take this issue very seriously and have already increased the number of litter checks to one every hour. We are now considering a number of further measures and are pleased that Babergh has been providing us with ideas and advice”.
Jonas Grist concluded “its very encouraging that Tesco is taking this issue seriously and is working with us to reduce the problem”.
