ONE 'EL OF AN EFFORT!

Summary

Eager volunteers wielding bin bags have managed to collect the equivalent weight of an Asian elephant in rubbish during a series of litter picking events in Babergh.
Eager volunteers wielding bin bags have managed to collect the equivalent weight of an Asian elephant in rubbish during a series of litter picking events in Babergh.

More than 3,000kg of dumped waste, which is roughly three tonnes, was gathered - about half of which was recyclable - as well as 380kg of dumped tyres. The most bizarre find was made by members of Lark Valley Young Farmer's Club, who found a full set of Reader's Digest magazines - complete with free steak knife!

The mass collection was the result of Spring Clean Suffolk week, which was rolled out across the district - and the county - from March 20 to 26. It was the brainchild of the Suffolk Agricultural Association and aimed to highlight the growing problem of litter in the countryside.

More than 21 groups, including schools, youth groups and parish councils, took part with Babergh District Council offering support and equipment for any events.

Great Waldingfield School held litter-themed lessons for its pupils and made a recycling robot out of litter while Sproughton Brownies and Leavenheath Beavers made anti-litter posters to display in their villages.

As part of the initiative, Babergh also waived its fees and ran a free amnesty service for the collection of unwanted vehicles, where more than 25 cars were taken away to 'rust in peace'.

Joanna Hart, the Council's technical officer (waste), said: "Babergh district has 353 litter bins so there is no excuse for anyone to drop litter on the floor.

"It is excellent that so many groups gave up their free time to take part in the spring clean and demonstrated that Babergh residents will not stand for littering."

The waste management team supports litter picks throughout the year. Anyone organising a litter pick can borrow equipment (pickers, gloves and high-visibility vests) from the Council by calling (01473) 825890. ENDS
