Plans to enrol the first students at University Campus Suffolk (UCS) by next year are forging ahead with local people getting the chance to see how their town could benefit when a roadshow rolls into Babergh.

Suffolk is one of only four counties across the UK without a designated university campus - but that is all set to change by September 2007 when UCS, a partnership between the universities of East Anglia and Essex, opens its doors.

Babergh District Council has backed the move, believing that it will help the local economy by providing a better-qualified workforce and closer links between businesses and research and development opportunities.

Although the main campus for UCS will be Ipswich, there are plans to open a number of 'learning points' throughout Suffolk so that students can study specific subjects.

A team from the university is visiting Sudbury later this month to outline the potential benefits to the town - and the district - if it became a 'learning point'.

The roadshow will see university staff meeting with invited local business leaders before it heads off to Great Cornard and Sudbury Upper Schools to discuss the project with students. The day will end with a chance for members of the public to question the team at an evening session in Gainsborough House.

Neil Henry, Babergh District Council's Economic Development Manager, said: "Sudbury and its surrounding areas could benefit enormously from a new university campus.

“This roadshow - along with a public meeting - is an ideal showcase and will give interested parties a glimpse into just what could lie ahead."

Key speakers from the project will be at the meeting to talk about how UCS will benefit Suffolk and what students will be able to study and where.

The meeting, which is open to all members of the public, will take place on Thursday, April 20, from 7pm until 8.30pm, and is being held in the Hills Room, Gainsborough House, Sudbury.
