CARVINGS UNVEILED AT FUN DAY

Summary

Babergh residents are being urged to take part in a free, family fun day organised to celebrate the finale of a community-based arts project.

Babergh residents are being urged to take part in a free, family fun day organised to celebrate the finale of a community-based arts project.

A dead and diseased tree in a Sudbury park has been transformed from a decaying stump which would have otherwise been removed into a living sculpture – with the help of specialist artists, residents and young people.

Now the artwork, which has been taking shape during a series of workshops, will be unveiled to the public and a special fun day has been arranged.

Summer In The Park is being held in Belle Vue Park, Sudbury, on September 3, from 12pm until 4pm and promises to be an action-packed afternoon.

Attractions at the event include a Tribe Skate team, on hand to give youngsters tips on a trick or two, community coach Glen Parker will be holding taster sessions in Basketball and Samba Soccer - and youngsters will be able to test their stamina and strength on a climbing wall.

Creative types will be able to have a bash at pottery and ‘junk’ artworks, balloon art, face painting, go plastic fantastic with carrier bags and create a giant art attack.

Babergh District Council’s Arts and Community Development department organised both the fun day and the carving project. The department aims to encourage and nurture arts activity in the community to enrich people’s lives.

Susie Tyrrell, Babergh’s Arts and Community Development Officer, said: “The project has been a huge success, thanks to the hard work and generosity of everyone involved.

“We hope the fun day will be just as much of a success and would urge as many people as possible to come along and take part.

“It is an ideal way to see the created sculpture first hand – and also have a bit of fun at the same time.”

Local groups supporting the project include Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury Town Council, Sudbury in Bloom, The Sudbury Society and Waitrose. It is also being supported by Arts Council England, East ,Babergh Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership and The Community Energy project.
