It has often been said you need to be tough to work in Babergh District Council’s Benefits and Revenues department - but one staff member has been taking it to extremes!
Lousie Pennell, one of Babergh's Benefits Officers, has been busy powerlifting her way to the top of the amateur sport and become a UK champion at the same time.
Lousie, who hails from Colchester, has just taken part in the British 2006 Unequipped Powerlifting Championships in Milton Keynes.
Last year she beat off stiff competition and managed to become the 2005 champ and was back again this year to defend her title.
Louise, 27, who is part of the Hamiltons Fitness Centre powerlifting team, said: "I wasn’t sure if I would be ready to defend my title this year but I worked really hard in the run-up to the event - and it paid off.
“I nearly didn’t make the competition because I had injured my knee and it only just held out. To top it all, I also had a serious ear infection, so the odds were stacked against me.
“After all of that, I am even more delighted with the win!”
Louise’s opening deadlift weighed 105kg (16.5 stone.) Her total over the competition was 240kg (38 stone) over three lifts.
As well as winning the last two years British championships, Louise has a stack of appearances in other UK competitions under her belt. ENDS
