CARVING YOUR WAY TO CREATIVITY!

Summary

Members of the public are being offered the chance to get creative and take part in a tree-carving project.
Members of the public are being offered the chance to get creative and take part in a tree-carving project.

People in the Sudbury and Great Cornard area will be able to join artist Jeff Higley while he works on the carvings in Belle Vue Park, Sudbury, as part of the Roots project.

In early May, Jeff worked with groups from Sudbury and Great Cornard Upper Schools and Suffolk County Council Youth and Connexions service to generate ideas for the designs to transform two dead and diseased trees in Belle Vue Park.

Babergh had identified the trees for removal but following successful use of a dead tree in Alexandra Road for a sculpture, the council’s horticultural department reduced the trees in such a way they could be used for sculptures.

As part of the project, the wider community had the chance to create prints inspired by Belle Vue Park at an open workshop on June 1

Anyone interested in taking part in a carving session (under supervision) has to be ten years old and booking is essential. To book, pop into the Tourist Information Centre, in Sudbury, or telephone 01787 881320.

The sessions are limited to two people per booking and take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3pm from the middle of July to the end of August.

The completion of the tree carvings will be celebrated at the free Summer in the Park event on September 3 between 12pm and 4pm.

Babergh District Council and Gainsborough’s House are working in partnership on a community project with young people in order to create tree sculptures/carvings in Belle Vue Park.

Susie Tyrell, Babergh’s Arts and Community Development Officer, said: “The purpose of the project is to engage young people in community arts activities enabling them to see their ideas come to life.

“The project is an ideal way to celebrate Belle Vue Park and Sudbury and will create lasting sculptures which, it is hoped, will be enjoyed by local school children, visitors to the area and all the local residents.”

The local groups helping to fund the project include, The Community Energy Project, Sudbury Town Council, Sudbury in Bloom, The Sudbury Society and Waitrose.

Arts Council England, East, Babergh District Council and the Babergh Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership are also supporting the project.ENDS
