AMPLIFYING YOUNG MUSIC TALENT

Summary

A series of workshops being held in Babergh needs all budding young rock, pop and urban music stars to step forward.

The sessions, which aim to unlock undiscovered talent in the Babergh district, are offering musicians the chance to take part in different styles of music, develop skills and learn about gigging.

Anyone can take part in The Amplifier Project - even if they have never picked up a guitar, drum stick or tried to spin vinyl before.

One of Babergh District Council’s five service priorities is: Raising Individual and Community Ambitions – and The Amplifier Project reflects this.

The project has been made possible with funding from Arts Council England East, Suffolk County Council, Babergh District Council and other Suffolk local authorities, along with the European Social Fund.

It aims to provide opportunities for young people to make, promote and discuss rock, pop and dance music.

Steve Law, a DJ, and the turntables will be at the Sudbury Arts Centre – along with rock tutors Simon Doling and Tim Ainslie. All the instruments are provided for interested youngsters to try for the first time or to build on current skills and experience.

The sessions are open to young people aged from 11 to 25 years old.

Mr Doling, The Amplifier Project Officer, said: “Anyone with any level of experience may come along to our workshops and we can help them discover new talents or help them build on experience they may already have.

“We are keen to hear from any young aspiring bands or musicians in and around Sudbury and find out from them what it is they need and want here in the local area.”

Susie Tyrrell, Babergh District Council’s Arts and Community Development Officer, said: “The Amplifier Project gives the opportunity for young people in the district and the county to experience music-making as a group of individuals and bands, to learn from each other and gain valuable skills from trained tutors and musicians.”

Weekly sessions are being held at Sudbury Arts Centre, Sudbury Upper School and Arts College, Tudor Road, Sudbury, on Thursdays from 7pm until 9pm.

The dates for this term’s sessions are: May 11, May 18, May 25, June 8, June 15, June 22, June 29 and July 6.
