Retired financier Cllr Brand travelled the world during a long and high-flying banking career, but has now found the recipe for successful fundraising closer to home.

It means he’s spending more time in the kitchen than at his computer screen. In place of facts and figures, there is flour, sugar, margarine and eggs – lots of them. Cllr Brand has used 30 eggs this week – making more than a dozen cakes.

His ‘lemon drizzle’ cakes are being sold at £1 a slice, a large fruit cake is being auctioned, and he making others to order for councillors who are donating to the Appeal.

Cllr Brand, of Long Melford, said: “I have a wide collection of recipes and love cooking, so I was happy to help.

“It’s easy to put your hand in your pocket and give money, but harder to bake cakes that people like. Fortunately, everyone seems to enjoy them and they have made generous donations. I am hoping to raise up to £150.”

In addition, Babergh District Council is holding a ‘Tiaras and Tuxedos’ day on Friday, November 17 - when staff will dress up to raise more money for the cause.

Images of Cllr Brand are available on request from the Communications Unit at Babergh District Council.
