A revamped awards scheme aimed at recognising the people, groups and businesses that play a vital role in the community has been officially launched.

Babergh’s Community Achievement Awards 2007, which are now in their 15th year, aims to highlight those who consistently make life better for others.

But this year, the normal format has had a makeover with two new categories being added – including one for businesses.

Information has been sent to all parish and town councils, schools, community and voluntary groups across the district - and now Babergh is urging anyone who thinks they know someone eligible to grab a nomination form and take part.

This year’s award categories are: outstanding contribution made by a young person or group of young people 18 years or under; selfless service by an individual (over 18) to a voluntary body or to the community; voluntary or community group that improves the quality of life for residents in our district and outstanding business contribution to the well-being of the community.

The deadline for nominations to be returned to Babergh is at the end of November, with judging to take place and winners notified by Christmas. All winners will then be invited to an awards ceremony being held on March 7 at the Stoke by Nayland Club.

Jill Barton, Babergh’s Corporate Support Officer, said: “There are countless individuals and groups out there – our community heroes - who selflessly give up their time to help others and are a real asset to the district.

“These awards are an ideal way for the recipients of that hard work and dedication to say thank you and give them the recognition they deserve.”

Mark Murphy, from BBC Radio Suffolk’s Breakfast programme will compere the achievement awards ceremony, which is being sponsored by Prolog.

For further information and nomination forms are available from Jill Barton, Corporate Support Officer, Babergh District Council, Corks Lane, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 6SJ, by calling (01473) 826674 or emailing jill.barton@babergh.gov.uk.
