Babergh District Councillors today gave the thumbs up to a development that will see even more affordable homes delivered in the district.
A proposal to build four, new, one-bedroom flats for rent on land to the south of 11-15 Elm Road, in Sudbury, was heard at a meeting of Babergh’s Development Committee today (Weds, Aug 8).
Members voted to grant planning permission subject to a requirement for contributions towards open space provision being agreed.
This proposal is part of Babergh’s commitment to providing 700 new affordable homes either built – or in the development pipeline - by 2010.
The project is a prime example of the District Council, in partnership with Flagship Housing Group, regenerating an area that was underused and giving it a new lease of life.
The idea for this project was born after Babergh has recently completed a major overhaul of the existing flats at Sandringham Court , which is also on the same site.
Ian Tippett, Babergh’s Housing Services Manager, said: “In response to residents, Babergh has invested substantial resources into upgrading the flats at Sandringham Court with, among other things, a new communal heating system, extra parking, landscaping and upgraded accommodation.
“There is a high need for affordable housing in Sudbury and while Babergh was working on neighbouring Sandringham Court, the opportunity to develop the garages – which were either in poor condition or underused – was recognised.
“We are delighted to be working with partner Flagship Housing Group to deliver more homes to the people of Sudbury.”
Doug Malins, Flagship’s Head of Business Development, added: “These new flats will complement the regeneration and refurbishment of Sandringham Court to enhance the local environment and provide much-needed modern homes for affordable rent.”
