Community groups across the district - from hockey clubs to keen fishermen - are celebrating as Babergh District Council unveils its latest grants awards.

Babergh has a cash pot of £100,000 to dish out to parish councils or community groups to help fund much-needed projects as part of its policy to raise individual and community ambition.

And now Babergh has unveiled the lucky clubs and projects to be given a boost:

  • Sudbury Hockey Club - £40,000 - Replace synthetic surface
  • Newton Green Village Hall Management Committee - £10,000 - Building extension
  • Sproughton Tennis Club - £7,700 - Resurfacing tennis court
  • River Stour Trust - £7,575 - Internal lift
  • Great Cornard Parish Council - £7,200 - Play equipment
  • Long Melford Village Memorial Hall - £5,300 - Toilet refurbishment
  • Hadleigh & District Angling Society - £4,900 - Phase two – fishing lake
  • Whatfield Village Hall Management Committee - £3,800 - Heating system
  • Hintlesham & Chattisham Community Council - £1,600 - Replace play equipment
  • Polstead Village Hall Management Committee - £1,000 – Loft insulation

Babergh is also urging other groups to step forward and apply for grants as there is at least £9,000 of the grant fund still unspent.

Applications have to come from the voluntary sector, parish councils or community groups and to match the funding from Babergh with locally-raised cash.

Jo Beever, Babergh’s Community Grants Officer, said: “We are delighted to be able to help fund these vital projects that are the lifeblood of our communities.

“And, what is even better news, is that there is some left over for others to benefit from too. For some groups, a grant of £2,000 makes a huge difference – Babergh still has £9,000, so consider applying – today!”

The grants scheme is outlined under the Community Grants page of Babergh's website. Any money awarded will have to be spent by March 2008.
