The Suffolk Association of Local Councils (SALC) has written to Babergh District Council, backing the latter’s stance over proposed Government changes to the East of England Plan. These proposed changes include one that could undermine restrictions on the number of new homes being built in the district.
Last week, Babergh’s Strategy Committee backed a resolution condemning the proposals to treat the number of homes scheduled to be built up until 2021 as a minimum as opposed to a maximum figure.
According to SALC Chief Executive, Shona Bendix “we are very concerned about a proposed absence of a guaranteed minimum of affordable housing. The Association recognises that people often have to leave their communities in order to obtain housing and those that wish to return to their communities after some time away are unable to enter the local housing market”.
Babergh’s Development Plan Manager, Rich Cooke welcomed SALC’s support. “We are hopeful that if more organisations back Babergh’s efforts, then we may be able to persuade the Government to back track on this matter”.
