A Sudbury householder who persistently ignored a Council’s request to properly dispose of her household waste was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £125 costs by local Magistrates today (March 15).

Babergh District Council brought the prosecution against Glenda Pooley, of Second Avenue, after she persistently left large numbers of filled rubbish bags outside of her house over a long period of time. Repeated requests by Council staff that she properly dispose of her excess waste, including at the local household waste site in the town, were ignored.

Sudbury Magistrates Court found Ms Pooley guilty of one charge and not guilty of another. She was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £125 costs.

Joanna Hart, the Council’s Technical Officer, said: “Babergh requires that all waste left out for collection must be placed in a wheeled bin. The overwhelming majority of Babergh residents comply with this request. In spite of having two, as opposed to the more usual one 240 litre bin, we received frequent reports that Ms Pooley and her household were placing bags out for collection.

“As well as being a cause for concern on health and safety grounds, the total yearly cost to Council Taxpayers of Babergh having to collect such extra waste amounts to over £15,000 – although that is being reduced by Babergh’s increased monitoring of certain ‘hotspots’.”

Investigations by Babergh’s Litter Warden showed that the waste in question had come from Ms Pooley’s house – with much of this material being used as evidence during the hearing .

Ms Hart added: “Babergh is pleased with this outcome as it shows to the small minority of persistent offenders that this type of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.” ENDS
