BABERGH TEENS TREAD THE BOARDS AS CRITICS!

Summary

A scheme that gives teenagers the chance to review theatre performances as professional critics is about to launch for 2007.
A scheme that gives teenagers the chance to review theatre performances as professional critics is about to launch for 2007.

For the fourth year running, Babergh District Council is working with the New Wolsey Theatre, in Ipswich, to give two students an opportunity to become theatre critics.

This year’s pair is from Hadleigh High School and the project, which is part of Babergh’s commitment to raise individual and community ambitions in the district, allows them to both review and promote the theatre productions within their school.

Nicole Gull and Charlotte Seager, both 15 years old, have been chosen to be theatre critics for 2007/08.

Their first review will be Blues in the Night and will take place tonight  (Sept 11). The show was a hit on Broadway and in the West End.

Jill Barton, Babergh’s Corporate Support Officer, said: “It is great to be working with the New Wolsey Theatre again. I am very excited about the productions our students will be reviewing.

“Nicole and Charlotte are both very keen to start and I am sure their year as theatre critics will be both challenging and beneficial.”

And Andrew Burton, Head of Marketing at the New Wolsey Theatre, said: “This scheme shows what benefits can flow when two organisations with similar objectives work so closely together.

“Nicole and Charlotte will be learning very practical and in-depth lessons about the craft of theatre reviewing, experience that will stand them in good stead for years to come.

“The New Wolsey will benefit from the increased profile Nicole and Charlotte are able to give these productions among their peer group.  We are proud to be associated with Babergh District Council through this innovative scheme.” ENDS
