Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio will make an impassioned plea to Babergh’s teens to consider the dangers of global warming and just what they can to do to make a difference.
The teen heartthrob will take the starring role in a DVD message being used by Babergh District Council to open its 2007 Youth Conference - Time 2 Make a Change – being held next month. Representatives, aged between 12 and 16 years old, from schools and youth organisations across the district will be taking part in the event which will look at the issue of global warming, and in particular at carbon footprints and food miles.
Workshops throughout the day will see staff from Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer and Waitrose, Sudbury, working together with students to design and market their own breakfast cereal. A consumer panel, made up of Babergh councillors and schoolteachers, will then taste test the cereal.
Delegates will have to consider how far the ingredients have travelled, whether locally-produced ingredients should be used and how the cereal should be packaged in order to design a product which will be as carbon neutral as possible.
Students will also be given presentations on how they can reduce their individual carbon footprints and how the effects of global warming could change our landscapes in the future.
A short DVD of the conference is being made and will be showcased at Suffolk County Council’s conference the following week where a campaign to create Suffolk as the greenest county in the UK will be launched.
Jill Barton, Babergh’s Corporate Support Officer, said: “We are really excited about this year’s conference which will promote and raise awareness of environmental issues both locally and globally.
“We will be encouraging all delegates to make lifestyle changes and the resulting DVD will further promote the message within schools and the wider community.”
The conference, which is sponsored by Waitrose, is taking place on 8th October from 9.30am to 3pm at the Stoke By Nayland Club. ENDS
