RESIDENTS URGED TO DISCUSS PROPOSALS.

Summary

Plans to build very sheltered housing in a Babergh village are one step closer with an open afternoon planned for the end of the month.
Plans to build very sheltered housing in a Babergh village are one step closer with an open afternoon planned for the end of the month.

Villagers in Capel St Mary will have a chance to find out more about the proposal, which includes 32 flats and bungalows and associated communal facilities including landscaped gardens, café and gym, when the community information event is held on September 20 in the village hall.

Babergh District Council has been working closely with Capel St  Mary Parish Council, Orwell Housing Association and Suffolk County Council on plans to build a very sheltered housing leasehold scheme in the parish.

A Housing Needs Survery confirmed the need for housing that would provide care and support for the frail and elderly. Very Sheltered Housing allows elderly residents to retain their independence and live comfortably, safe in the knowledge that a high level of care and support is provided.

Representatives from Babergh, the scheme architects, Orwell Housing Association, Suffolk County Council and the Parish Council will be on hand to answer questions.

Tim Cottrell, Babergh’s Housing Enabling Officer, said: “The open afternoon is being held to gain the views of the local residents as it allows the community to comment on the proposals.

“The intention will be to take the local views on board before proceeding to a planning application in the autumn.

“This event by no means replaces local residents’ right to comment formally on the proposal to Babergh as part of the statutory planning process, but is an extra opportunity.”

A legal restriction will be placed on the scheme that will mean residents from Capel St Mary and the surrounding parishes of Copdock & Washbrook, Great Wenham, Little Wenham, Bentley, Holton St Mary, East Bergholt & Raydon, will get priority.

Further information on the open afternoon, which takes place between 4pm and 8pm on September 20, will be available in the village hall nearer the date. In the meantime, anyone with questions is asked to call Greg Dodds, New Business Manager at Orwell, on (01473) 228648. ENDS
