Energy-conscious workers at Babergh District Council are going head-to-head in a competition to see who can most reduce their electricity consumption.

For the whole of October, staff at Babergh’s offices in Corks Lane, Hadleigh, will be taking part in a Switch It Off campaign aimed at highlighting energy wastage.

The competition, which will see staff split into seven teams dependent on which electricity meter they hook up to, is being run to coincide with national Energy Efficiency week, which starts on the 22nd October.

Council officers are being encouraged to turn off computers and other electrical items, such as printers and lights, when they are not being used.

It is estimated that just by doing those simple things, Babergh could save £5,000 off its £40,000-a-year electricity bill.

Jonas Grist, Babergh’s Technical Officer (Waste), said: “Everyone has a duty to help reduce the amount of electricity they consume – especially in the current climate where people are more aware of the direct consequence their action has on the state of the planet.

“Many companies use inordinate amounts of unnecessary energy without even realising it. Hopefully once people start to get into the habit of switching off, it will become part of their daily routine.

“This campaign will mean that Babergh is not only saving itself money but also working towards CRed Suffolk’s target of reducing Co2 emissions by 60 per cent by 2025.”

Staff will receive regular updates throughout October so they can see which team is managing to reduce its consumption the most.

The winning team will be notified at the end of the month. Prizes for the team include energy-saving lightbulbs, plus locally-made produce to bring those carbon footprints down even further. ENDS
