More homes for affordable rent are on the cards after plans to build six new houses and bungalows were given the green light.
Members of Babergh District Council’s Development Committee last week (Feb 6) gave the thumbs up to proposals for the new homes to be built on land north of Palfrey Heights, Brantham. Brantham was earmarked for an affordable homes development after a Housing Needs Survey in 2002 showed significant demand from local people.
The new homes, once built, will be available for affordable rent restricted to local families on Babergh’s Common Housing Register – and with a connection to Brantham.
As part of its commitment to affordable housing, Babergh District Council has been looking at ways to increase the number of affordable homes using existing council-owned land.
A survey of Babergh-owned land identified the land at Palfrey Heights, which was sold at a discount to Orwell Housing Association for development as part of Babergh’s pledge to provide 700 new, affordable homes built – or in the development pipeline – by 2009/10.
Ian Tippett, Babergh’s Housing Services Manager, said “ I am delighted that the go ahead has been given for this scheme, which will benefit the people of Brantham by providing a range of much needed affordable housing.
"We understand the concerns of some residents and already have plans to place for representatives from Babergh and Orwell to visit everyone on Brantham Hill affected by this much-needed development of affordable homes to talk through any problems that could arise.
"During these individual home visits, we will be discussing the provision of boundary fencing and, where people are unable to move any shrubs and plants from this piece of land back to their original gardens, we will be offering help with that free-of-charge.
"We will also be talking through the possibility of providing hard-standings for cars if residents wish to have that facility too."
And Greg Dodds, New Business Manager at Orwell Housing Association, added: “Orwell has been working to identify sites in Brantham for a number of years and we are delighted that we have now finally secured planning consent to deliver some affordable housing for the community.
“We look forward to working successfully in partnership with Babergh and the local Parish Council to provide these much needed homes for future generations of Brantham.” ENDS
