A second phase of a housing programme that will see 20 new, affordable homes in a Babergh village is due to be officially opened this week (July 18).
The homes at Cross Green, in Cockfield near Lavenham, are the second phase in a four-phase project to be finished that will provide affordable homes for local people.
The homes, which have been built on land bought from a local farmer by Orwell Housing Association, will be available for affordable rent and New Build Home Buy (formerly Shared Ownership).
Cockfield Parish Council and Babergh District Council chose to work with Orwell following a local housing needs survey which identified a very high level of need for affordable homes for people living or working in the village, or wishing to return to live in the village.
The homes have been developed using Social Housing Grant from the Housing Corporation and has been supported by Babergh District Council.
The Parish Council is continuing to work with Orwell Housing Association and Babergh and has two further sites under construction in other locations in the village, providing a further nine homes. In total the partnership will have provided 20 affordable homes by early 2009.
Ian Tippett, Babergh’s Strategic Housing Manager, said: “Babergh is committed to developing affordable housing opportunities within the district because we know demand from local people is high.
“We are delighted with this latest phase of the Cockfield scheme and are sure it will be a fantastic addition to the local community.
“This is another example of Babergh working in partnership with parish councils and housing associations to provide an opportunity for local people to be able to afford a rental or shared ownership property.”
Stephen Javes, Chief Executive of Orwell Housing Association, added: “The completion of the second phase of new homes for Cockfield is a commendable achievement and Orwell is very pleased to be able to assist the village to provide these much-needed homes that will contribute towards the sustainability of this thriving rural community.
“With the support from Babergh District Council and their commitment to increasing the provision of affordable housing in the district, the result is an example of good quality homes for Orwell and the parish to be proud of.” ENDS
