INTERNATIONAL FILM FEAST COMES TO BABERGH!

Summary

Film lovers in Babergh will have the chance to enjoy some of the world’s best films – thanks to a pilot film festival.

Film lovers in Babergh will have the chance to enjoy some of the world’s best films – thanks to a pilot film festival.

The Wider Picture Project (Babergh International Film Festival) will be taking place at eight venues around the district during April and May - and aims to bring the best of international cinema to areas that do not have their own cinema.

And the whole festival is launching on April 2nd at Lavenham Village Hall where French film The Chorus (Les Choristes) will be screened.

The aim of The Wider Picture Project is to increase the range of films available for the local communities, promote understanding of other cultures and lifestyles and to develop audiences for foreign language films in the venue’s catchment area.

Jill Barton, Babergh’s Arts and Community Development Officer said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for film lovers in Babergh to view some very different films which will highlight the diverse cultures across the world and also aid promotion of the numerous digital cinema venues across the district.”

And Dave Gregory, Manager of Aldeburgh Cinema and who helped co-ordinate the festival on behalf of Babergh, added: “The idea of a film festival was initiated by the Sudbury and District Branch of the United Nations and was welcomed enthusiastically from groups around Babergh, who are already part of the Suffolk Digital Cinema Network.

“We’ve worked hard to bring in films that you might not necessarily encounter on a trip to one of the larger cinema chains and are delighted with how well this has been received.

“We hope the people who come along really enjoy themselves – and the films.”

Venues taking part in the festival are Flix In the Stix, Lavenham, Polstead Village Hall, Polstead, Hartest Cinema, Hartest, Hollywood At Hadleigh, Hadleigh, The Quay Theatre, Sudbury, Screen At Sproughton, Sproughton, Peninsular Pix,Tattingstone and Glemsford Screen, Glemsford.

All of the venues are part of Suffolk Digital Cinema Network, a countywide organisation set up four years ago to assist groups to organise film shows in towns and villages in Suffolk without cinemas.

Each venue, which is run by local volunteers, will be screening films for adults and children -  with some screenings accompanied by food from the film’s country of origin.

Tickets cost £3 for adult shows and £1 for children’s films. They can be bought from the local venue or through a central box-office at The Quay Theatre on (01787) 374745.

Full details of all films being shown during the festival, together with venue and contact details can be found in the Wider Picture Project page on Babergh’s website or The Quay Theatre’s website: www.quaytheatre.org.uk.
