ROTTEN PROBLEMS? LET THE COMPOST DOCTOR SORT IT FOR YOU

Having problems with your compost? Not sure what should go in and be kept out of your composter? If so, Babergh District Council, in partnership with Mid Suffolk District Council, is offering the advice of its very own ‘compost doctor’ – plus giving away the stuff for nothing!

Between 9am and 3pm on Saturday 10th May at the South Suffolk Business Centre, Alexandra Road, Sudbury, Babergh and Mid Suffolk officers will be giving away compost made from garden waste taken from the Council’s successful Brown Bin scheme.
According to Jonas Grist, Babergh’s Waste Strategy Officer “it is literally a case of turn up with a car, or wheelbarrow and shovel it yourself into bags. The public needs only to bring along their own bags and shovel!”
There will be a home composting display where residents can see subsidised compost bins on display. Sarah Russell, Babergh’s Trade Waste Officer is officially a 'Master Composter' (having been on an accredited Suffolk County Council course) and has offered to be a 'compost doctor' to help residents with compost problems!

“Babergh District Council has been promoting the benefits of home composting for some time. As well as benefiting the environment, home composting of shredded paper, vegetable peelings, fruit skins and tea bags can reduce the weight of a typical family's black bin by a quarter. We think more people would try it if they knew a few key ways of getting it right”.

Babergh’s Brown Bin scheme is available for those residents who cannot or do not wish to home compost. The scheme is currently used by over 7,000 households and saw the collection of over 3,000 tonnes of garden waste in the last year.
