A group of teenagers from Glemsford is determined to try and change their community’s perception of ‘youth today’ with a screening of a special film project.

The film project, which was organised and funded by Babergh District Council, wanted to challenge the perceived concerns of Glemsford residents, who in the past have suffered from a series of anti-social behaviour issues in their village.

And now the film will be shown to an audience of parents, villagers, community leaders and business people, as well as local police officers and youth workers at a special screening on Thursday evening (May 15th).

The group - Kim Willett, Kayleigh Wilson, Nicky Carr, Pearl Prigg, Leigha Taylor and Chelsea Howell - all aged between 14 and 16 years old, called themselves Teenagers Speak Out Loud after a series of successful taster sessions in the February half-term.

They worked with film-makers CSV Media during the workshops and came together again during the Easter Holidays to produce the film which aims to show a snippet of real life in the village through teenager’s eyes.

One criticism voiced by teenagers in the film is that there is nowhere for their peer group to meet in Glemsford.

The youngsters have now been offered a church hall for one evening a week but desperately need to find volunteers to help them to get the project off the ground. The group are also looking, with the help of Babergh, at various funding opportunties in order to purchase new equipment to support the project.

Jill Barton, Babergh’s Arts and Community Development Officer, said: “This project was a real success and it was all down to the hard work and enthusiasm of the girls taking part.

“We think that the film will have a positive impact in helping the different generations in Glemsford understand each other a lot more.”

The screening is taking place at 7.30pm on Thursday at Glemsford Village Hall. It will be followed by an open discussion called ‘Building Bridges’.

If you think you can help the group by volunteering, on a rota basis, to help one evening per week so the group can get their new project off the ground, please call Jill Barton on  (01473) 826674 or email: jill.barton@babergh.gov.uk. ENDS
